I list some of the achievements in baseball that I have a deep appreciation.
This list will grow as I think of this great game.
Hank Aaron – Hitting home runs 715 – Well 755 homers
What should have been like to chase a legend? Babe Ruth's record of 714 career homers was a record never I thought it would be approved. I have read and heard on television what it was when Hank approached Babe magic number of 714 walkers of all life. Hank received threatening letters. Some of the letters were death threats. Imagine receiving a letter describing how he shot while in the garden. The FBI was called in to investigate some of the letters received from Hank. Throughout Hank Aaron continued to escalate and eventually overcome the Bambino. An astonishing achievement given the circumstances. Opponents were actively trying to annoy, threaten and distract Hank. Just for being a great player and being black. Just to play, and excel in the game that he liked to play.
Barry Bonds hit 73 homers in 2001
At the age of 36 years Barry Bonds made a striking display that captured the attention of the United States. The people who were not tuned to baseball, began to take a look at this demonstration of power. Yes, I know it has said that he took steroids. While I am not condoning the use of steroids – I am grateful for the years he had. Balls were flying everywhere and off the field. McCovey Cove, a boat basin beyond the field stands right, had people ship docked and ready to capture the next home run Bonds. The fans were suing each other for a homer into the stands. This was an impressive demonstration of power. Apparently there is a frenzy associated with up to Barry to immortality.
Denny McLain winning 30 games in 1968 In 1934, Dizzy Dean won 30 games for the St. Louis Cardinals. It was the last man to win 30 before Denny McLain. Ever since Denny McLain won 30, nobody has that number. During the last 71 baseball seasons (1934 to 2005), Denny McLain
was the only pitcher to win 30 games in a season. Many pitchers won 30 before the Dizzy great season 1934, as Walter Johnson, Smoky Joe Wood and Christy Mathewson to name a few. Grover Cleveland Alexander won 30 or more, three years in a row. Denny Mclain it was a heck of a year in 1968.
Yankees win five world championships from 1949 to 1953
Excellence personified. – Put everything in perspective what a great race for the World Championships it was. Few teams have met long championship in any sport. Winning twice in a row is quite an achievement. Winning three times in a row has only happened twice in the history of baseball from 1900 until today. The Oakland Athletics did it from 1972 to 1974.
With Reggie Jackson, Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers team leader. And the New York Yankees from 1998 to 2000 with Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams and Mariano Rivera, also had a three-peat. The Yankees won four straight from 1936 to 1939 with Lou Gehrig Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey and Lefty Gomez. The Yankees beat the streak of all time with their teams from 1949 to 1953. Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto and Whitey Ford anchored those teams. Beating Brooklyn in '49, '52, '53 and '50 Giants at Philadelphia at 51.
Winning two years in a row is very difficult. Three very difficult years. Four and five years is almost impossible. It's an endurance test, a will to win and focused on what to do.
