Steroids are synthetically produced variant of testosterone, a naturally occurring hormone in both men and women. They were first developed for dealing with puberty late, some types of impotence, and wasting of the body caused by HIV or other infectious diseases. Scientists discovered in the 1930s, the steroids stimulate muscle growth in lab animals, which led to the steroid abuse by body builders and other professional athletes.
Anabolic and are two effects androgenic steroids. Are anabolic, meaning that promote cell growth in the body. They can increase the synthesis of proteins from amino acids, appetite, bone remodeling and growth, and stimulates growth of bone marrow in the body. The increased production of spinal bone can also lead to increased production of red blood cells.
The characteristics of androgenic steroids means that directly affect development of masculine characteristics, even when used in women. Steroids can lead to increased growth of androgen sensitive hair, enlarged of the vocal cords, increasing oil production from the sebaceous glands, increased sexuality, reproductive organ growth and increased libido in both men and women.
Through both types of effects, steroids can stimulate the muscles, and result in muscle mass and increase in size. This is mainly due to increased skeletal muscle size, caused by muscle proteins and a slower growth process decomposition. Increased testosterone can also lead to decreased fat, making it easier to gain muscle mass over time.
Several professional athletes, from football players to participants in the Olympic Games have used steroids. Blood tests are used to confirm that the athletes are using steroids to gain muscle mass due to steroids are no longer legal. Some people require elevated testosterone levels due to their inability to produce on their own and the use of steroids are available only by prescription.
Steroids have been associated with a number of side effects, ranging from physical to mental changes. Extended use of steroids can lead to long-term problems in health such as cancer, cardiovascular problems, and levels high cholesterol, but many of the problems associated with steroids are reversible when steroid use stops.
Physical side effects can result from steroid use include the development of breast tissue in men, excessive acne on the face, chest and back, increased facial hair growth men and women, and a deepening of the voice in men and women.
Steroid use can also lead to various psychological effects, such as depression, reduced sex drive, loss of appetite, increased irritability and aggression.
