I've always been shy with the camera, which went hand in hand with my biggest fear when I awoke on the morning of a big event with a huge grain that dominates the face. Nobody wants your acne immortalized in photos! I did it for my graduation photos well, and I was clear enough skin for the big grad party, but there have been several occasions since then, when I was not so lucky. There are many different types of acne, and while none of them are particularly pleasant, some may actually be very easy to cover with makeup. Whiteheads and blackheads are two types of non-inflammatory acne usually not noticeable from a few feet away. Even pustules, which are larger and more inflamed, can be hidden with skillful makeup application. But what if the inflammation is deeper? Is there anything that can be done by discrete or cysts to make them less sensitive?
Cortisone is a steroid hormone that, along with adrenaline, is released from the adrenal glands when the body experiences stress. Cortisone has many functions, including maintaining stable blood pressure, but one of the most important functions is its ability cortisone to decrease inflammation through suppression of the immune system. Therefore, the cortisone is used in the treatment of shoulder bursitis, arthritis, lupus, severe asthma, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and several sports injuries involving ligaments and tendons. When used as a medicine for the body human, synthetic cortisone can come in several different ways, but the primary form is as an injection, whether local or systemic. It's like a dilute solution of intralesional injection of cortisone is used in the treatment of acne.
Acne is red and irritated when bacteria in a clogged pore begin to reproduce. This irritates the cells around the pore, and triggers an immune reaction. Cortisone can help an acne lesion by stifling this reaction immune. Once injected into a papule or cyst, there is an immediate reduction in redness and inflammation. As the swelling goes down, the pain disappears, and the grain is flattened to make it easier camouflaged by makeup. This usually happens within 24 hours of injection. As a bonus, cortisone is thought it helps heal faster grains, preventing the buildup of scar tissue beneath the patch.
While cortisone is injected into a form very dilute, there are minimal side effects. One of the most serious consequences of too much cortisone injection into the lesion is skin atrophy. This is where the skin actually is reduced, leaving a shallow groove, where the stain had been. Often heals itself, but if the atrophy seems permanent, there are procedures that are can do to elevate the atrophied area so it is even with the surrounding skin. Another side effect is a clarification of the color of the skin at the injection site. There are limited suggestions for ways to counter this particular side effect, but a dermatologist could give you more information.
If before an injury acne growing a few days before an important event, which sounds like a cortisone injection may be an ideal way to minimize the grain so quickly and efficiently. Another advantage is that the procedure was reportedly quite fast, and sometimes may even perform the last minute, without a pre-booking appointment. If you think this could be a route that will take in the future, it would be worth talking to your dermatologist now, before you're in a rush and stressed about acne ruin her big day. Meanwhile, keep this regime going skin care, cortisone and perhaps not even necessary!
