The good news is that families struggling with addiction are generally strong families. Their strength lies in no small way to the depth of their devotion to their relative, and the preservation of family unity. To love a family member is dependent loyalty, hope and memory – the memory the person who was loved until dependency takes place in the family home, and we hope that this person can "return". This type of love is sustained optimism and compassion, but can lead to more serious problems if not supported by the wisdom, support and healthy coping skills. No family is born with the knowledge of how to effectively deal with addiction. It is a skill that must be learned and practiced daily, and can be greatly helped by mentoring. Â

I often have to remind families that, although the drug is responsible for their own recovery, they are all in the same boat. The drug also can be devouring families forget that they have needs that are not met, the chaos where there should be a sanctuary, or that relationships are damaged to be repaired. When the dependence infiltrates a family, relations are tense, anxious and suspicious. Battle fatigue and despair set in Because addiction hurts the whole family, it is absolutely essential that solutions are designed to restore the family wholeness. Â
Recovery dependence is a family matter to
Constructive engagement and family active in the recovery process is essential if the family is healing the destructive impact of addiction. It helps to keep in mind that the commitment to the process of recovery of addicts is also committed to the welfare of the family. Significant gains will be made along the way to help everyone. Families are strengthened by increasing levels of real intimacy, and seeing themselves better cope with challenges. The discipline of recovery can not meet the family to be the healthiest it has ever been – a true recipe for success!
